Renting a sailboat in Notodden on Heddalsvatnet

Notodden lies at the northern end of Heddalsvatnet, where the Tinnelva runs into the lake, at the top of the eastern arm of the Telemark Canal. A sailboat for six is kept in Notodden, with a toilet and galley; its owner notes that the canal gives it access to the sea.

Heddalsvatnet lies only 16 m above sea level, so two lock sites near Skien were enough to open it to shipping, and after the canal opened in 1861 Notodden became Norway's largest inland port. South of Nautsundet the lake becomes Bråfjorden, and the river Saua leads on to Norsjø. Skien lies about 80 km away along the canal. The locks are fully staffed from late June to mid-August, and because the canal is a drinking-water source, emptying septic tanks or waste into it is forbidden.
