Hokksund on the Drammenselva

Hokksund, the administrative centre of Øvre Eiker, grew up on both banks of the Drammenselva. The name comes from the farm Haug and sund, a ferry crossing: before the first bridge opened in 1853, travellers were rowed over by the so-called sundmenn. From 1862 a small steamer, DS Nøkken, ran between Drammen and Hokksund, but competition from the railway ended the service in the early 1870s.

Further down the valley, in Drammen municipality, a 26 ft diesel cabin cruiser is kept whose owner lets you view it before booking. With a double berth, a separate toilet, an outdoor galley, a bathing platform with shower and a bow thruster, it suits weekends and holidays as well as day trips.

From Drammen the way to the sea runs through the Drammensfjord. Since 1 January 2026 that fjord has been part of the Oslofjord zero-fishing area, closed to every kind of fishing, so leave the rods at home.
