Herre on the Frierfjord
Herre is a small community in Bamble on the Frierfjord, about 5 km south-west of Porsgrunn, where the Herre river system runs into the fjord. It calls itself Norway's oldest industrial site, with sawmills, mills and iron hammers going back to 1497 and a pulp mill that was the main employer for ninety years, but it never became a seafaring village.
Herre itself has a RIB skippered by its owner. The other boats listed are up the fjord in Porsgrunn and Skien, or down at Stathelle and Brevik, mostly cabin cruisers and day cruisers that suit a trip out towards the islands.
The Frierfjord runs 14 km from the Porsgrunn river to the Langesundsfjord and narrows to about 300 m at Brevik. South of that strait, Siktesøya lies in Breviksfjorden, and the islands around Brevik are covered in our boat trips in Grenland.
This is a working fjord. Ships serve industrial quays at Rafnes and at Herre itself, so stay well out of their way, and hold 5 knots or less inside 100 m of the shore. Grenland's rules also ban jet skis for play or sport in Bamble, Porsgrunn and Skien.
