Renting a boat in Kos: questions and answers
What does it cost to rent a boat in Kos?
Charter yachts cost from €1,200 per week, typically €3,250 per week (126 yachts with a price). Prices vary by date and season, and each boat shows the exact price for your dates.
Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Kos?
Yes. 2 of the 126 boats on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.
How many people can come along on a rental boat in Kos?
The largest boat here takes up to 12 people, and a typical boat takes 10.
Do I need a boat licence in Greece?
Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Why charter in Kos?
From Kos Marina, Pserimos and Kalymnos are a short hop, Nisyros and its volcano lie to the south, and Leros and Patmos to the north. Short distances leave time for swimming stops and long evenings ashore.
Kos airport has direct flights from much of Europe in summer and is about 30 minutes from the marina by car.
A week from Kos
A classic week runs Kos – Pserimos – Kalymnos – Leros – Lipsi, or south to Nisyros and Tilos. With two weeks you can continue to Patmos or south to Rhodes.
The Turkish coast around Bodrum is close, but crossing into Turkish waters needs customs formalities and your charter company's permission.
Wind and season
In July and August the meltemi blows through the Dodecanese, often strongest in the afternoons and in the channels between islands. May, June and September are the calmer months.
Bareboat or with a skipper
For a bareboat charter in Greece, the skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC, and a second crew member needs sailing experience. Most Kos boats are chartered bareboat, by the week, Saturday to Saturday. See all yacht charters in Greece.
Boat rental in Kos: starting from Kos Marina
The boats on this page are based at Kos Marina, on the edge of Kos town about a mile south-east of the old harbour, with 80 extra berths at Mandraki. The airport is about 25 km away, roughly 30 minutes by taxi. Call the marina on VHF channel 77 when you return.
On offer are mostly sailing yachts and catamarans for a week, plus a few larger yachts that only go out with a skipper.
Kos sits in the middle of the Dodecanese. Pserimos and Kalymnos lie to the north, Nisyros to the south, so the first and last days can be short whichever way you go. The longer loop via Leros and Patmos is in our Dodecanese itinerary from Kos.
Wind is what to plan for. In the southern Aegean the summer meltemi blows from the north-west, from about mid-May to mid-September, and is often strongest in the afternoon. Doing the northbound, upwind miles early in the week and early in the day leaves the downwind run back to Kos for the end.
