Renting a boat in Rhodes: questions and answers

What does it cost to rent a boat in Rhodes?

Charter yachts cost from €1,000 per week, typically €3,350 per week (120 yachts with a price). Prices vary by date and season, and each boat shows the exact price for your dates.

Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Rhodes?

Yes. At least 6 of the boats on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.

How many people can come along on a rental boat in Rhodes?

The largest boat here takes up to 12 people, and a typical boat takes 10.

Do I need a boat licence in Greece?

Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Where do boats in Rhodes sail from?

Most of the fleet is based at Rhodes Marina, just south of the town; a smaller number sail from Mandraki harbour, next to the old town walls. Rhodes Diagoras airport is about 20 minutes away by car, and there are direct flights from much of Europe in summer.

Where to sail from Rhodes

Symi, with its colourful harbour, is about 20 nautical miles north-west, a comfortable first day. From there a week can take in Tilos, Nisyros and Halki, or follow the east coast of Rhodes south to Lindos and its acropolis.

The Turkish coast is close, but crossing into Turkish waters needs customs formalities and your charter company's permission. Ask before you plan it. To the north lies Kos, the other big Dodecanese base.

Wind and season

The meltemi reaches the Dodecanese in July and August, often strongest in the channels between the islands. May, June, September and October are the most relaxed months to sail.

Bareboat or with a skipper

For a bareboat charter in Greece, the skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC, and a second crew member needs sailing experience. Some Rhodes boats can be hired with a skipper; each listing shows its options. Most boats are chartered by the week, Saturday to Saturday. See all yacht charters in Greece.

Rhodes: marina or Mandraki

Nearly every charter yacht listed for Rhodes lies in Rhodes Marina, the modern marina beside the island's central commercial port, with about 600 berths and the airport roughly 14 km away. A smaller group lies in Mandraki, the historic yacht harbour below the walls of the medieval town. The fleet is chiefly monohulls and catamarans taken by the week, plus a handful of motor yachts.

Should your boat be in Mandraki, or you return there, the harbour's own notes are worth reading first. Rocks and shallow water lie on the north side of the entrance, and old mooring lines run about 30 m out along the bottom, so let out plenty of chain. Mandraki answers on VHF 09; Rhodes Marina on VHF 71.

Rhodes is the south-eastern corner of the Dodecanese, and three outings stand out: - Symi, roughly 24 km north across open water, where yachts moor in the harbour town of Yialos. Its closest land is not Greek but the Datça and Bozburun peninsulas of Turkey. - Halki, a small island about 9 km off the west side of Rhodes, whose only village is Emporio. - Lindos, about 40 km down the east coast, with an acropolis above St Paul's Bay.

For a full week built around Symi, see our Rhodes and Symi loop.
