Renting a boat in Santorini: questions and answers
What does it cost to rent a boat in Santorini?
Charter yachts cost from €4,950 per week, typically €7,150 per week (12 yachts with a price). Prices vary by date and season, and each boat shows the exact price for your dates.
Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Santorini?
Yes. 9 of the 12 boats on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.
How many people can come along on a rental boat in Santorini?
The largest boat here takes up to 12 people, and a typical boat takes 8.
Do I need a boat licence in Greece?
Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Santorini: from Vlychada into the caldera
Vlychada, the small harbour on Santorini's south coast, is home to almost the whole fleet; a sailing yacht is listed at the port below Oia, at the island's northern tip. Most are catamarans, alongside some monohulls and a motor yacht, all rented by the week.
The reason to sail here is the caldera, a flooded volcanic crater about 12 by 7 km, ringed on three sides by cliffs some 300 m high and up to 385 m deep. In its centre lies Nea Kameni, an uninhabited volcanic island about 2 km across that scientists monitor closely and dozens of tour boats visit daily in summer, with smaller Palea Kameni beside it. Therasia, on the western rim, is the second island of the group, home to about 250 people in villages such as Manolas and Potamos. The white villages you see from the water line the rim of Thera itself.
Summer here belongs to the meltemi, the Aegean's dry northerly, which sets in around the middle of May and fades by the middle of September. It builds through the day, peaks after lunch and can hit force 7 to 8 under a cloudless sky, so the morning is the time for longer legs. Our guide to the meltemi and the best time to sail compares the months.
