Renting a boat in Syros: questions and answers
Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Syros?
Yes. 1 of the 2 boats on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.
How many people can come along on a rental boat in Syros?
The boats here take up to 8 people.
Do I need a boat licence in Greece?
Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Finikas: the Syros base on the south-west coast
The boats listed for Syros are not in Ermoupoli, the island's capital, but at Finikas port on the south-west coast, about 12 km away. After Ermoupoli, the bay of Finikas is the only natural harbour on Syros, and its shape shelters small boats from the strong north winds. The boats here include a crewed catamaran and a bareboat sailing yacht, chartered by the week.
The village has an organised beach, small sandy coves, tavernas and the church of Agios Panteleimon. A short way off lie the quiet beach of Kokkina and the islet of Psachno, where traces of Cycladic culture have been found.
Syros sits in the middle of the Cyclades, 78 nautical miles from Athens. Our seven-day Cyclades route stops in Finikas on the leg from Mykonos, about 23 nm, and notes its small marina of about 25 places and its relative shelter from the meltemi.
