Renting a boat in Heraklion: questions and answers

Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Heraklion?

Yes. The boat on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.

How many people can come along on a rental boat in Heraklion?

The boats here take up to 8 people.

Do I need a boat licence in Greece?

Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Skippered sailing from Heraklion

Heraklion is the largest city on Crete. The site once served as the port of Minoan Knossos, and the Venetians, who called the city Candia, built the fortress that still stands in the harbour, known today as Koules.

A 14 m sailing yacht for up to eight guests, with three cabins and two heads, is based at Heraklion port. It is chartered with a skipper, from a single day upwards.

The nearest island is Dia, about 13 km north of the city: uninhabited, 5 km long and 3 km wide. Its south coast has four coves, Agios Georgios, Kapari, Panagia and Agrielia, used as anchorages since Minoan times, with a fifth, Aginara, to the east. Seen from Heraklion, the island looks like a giant lizard, and according to myth Zeus turned a lizard that threatened Crete to stone with a thunderbolt.
