Renting a boat in Chora Sfakion: questions and answers

Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Chora Sfakion?

Yes. 1 of the 2 boats on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.

How many people can come along on a rental boat in Chora Sfakion?

The largest boat here takes up to 8 people, and a typical boat takes 7.

Do I need a boat licence in Greece?

Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Renting a boat in Chora Sfakion on Crete's south coast

Chora Sfakion, or simply Sfakia, is a small town on the south coast of Crete, 74 km south of Chania, near the end of the Imbros Gorge and below the White Mountains. It has two small harbours, and the boats here are based in the port: they include a catamaran that sails with a skipper and a sailing yacht you can charter bareboat.

West along the coast lies Loutro, which can be reached only on foot or by sea. It was the harbour of ancient Anopolis and later Sfakia's winter port, thanks to its natural shelter. Further west is Agia Roumeli, where the Samaria Gorge meets the sea, and Gavdos, Greece's southernmost island, lies 26 nautical miles to the south.

The harbour is busy with the ferries that link Chora Sfakion with Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Gavdos, so keep clear of them when you come and go.
