Horten grew around Karljohansvern, the Navy's main base from 1850 to 1963, and the old base, with the naval museum in its Magasin A, is still the town's landmark from the water. The other boats shown are across the fjord in Moss, Larkollen and Manstad, or up the coast in Holmestrand, and include open boats, RIBs and day cruisers.
Close by is Løvøya, with its 13th-century chapel and St Olav's well, a medieval pilgrim spring. Bastøy lies to the south-east.
