Holmestrand, the town under the cliff

Holmestrand is known as the town under the mountain: its centre is squeezed between a steep cliff and the fjord. Dutch ships were already loading timber here around 1550, and in 1840 it became the third town in Norway with a seaside spa. Several boats on this page are in and around town: a large sailing yacht that only goes out with its owner as skipper, a small classic sailboat, RIBs, and a light motorboat at Selvik further north. The others are at Horten to the south, at Svelvik and across the fjord in Asker.

Offshore lies Langøya, an island in the Holmestrandfjord that was quarried for limestone from the 1650s until 1985 and has been used as a waste landfill since 1993, so it is a landmark to pass rather than a place to land.

Two speed rules matter when you cast off: 3 knots in the town's harbour basin by the breakwater, and 5 knots anywhere less than 200 m from the shore or from an island or skerry. Fishing is not an option either, as Holmestrand is inside the Oslofjord zero-fishing zone.
