Moss and Jeløy: boats by the Mossesundet

Several of the boats on this page are in Moss itself: a 26 ft cabin cruiser and a 25 ft day cruiser close to town, a small open boat further north, and a sailing yacht handed over at the Moss sailing club's berths. The others are a short trip away, a RIB at Larkollen, boats across the fjord in Horten and Åsgårdstrand, and a pilothouse boat in Asker.

Moss faces Jeløy, about 10 km long and 19 km², which is really a peninsula: in 1855 a 20 m wide canal was cut through the isthmus at Værlesanden to open the Mossesundet to coastal traffic. Most of Jeløy's shoreline is undeveloped, with beaches such as Refsnesstranda, Tronvikstranda and Sjøbadet by the canal, which holds a Blue Flag. On the west side, the cliffs of Rambergnebba are a popular jumping spot, with heights of 6 to 21 m, and most people get there by boat. Gullholmen, with its old lighthouse, lies just off the south-west tip.

Check your height before heading for the canal. The bridge over it, Kanalbrua, has been welded shut since 1975, so a boat that cannot fit under it has to reach the town harbour the long way, round the north of Jeløy.
