What is Ship O’Hoi?

Giske: four islands north-west of Ålesund

Giske municipality consists of two flat islands, Giske and Vigra, and two hillier ones, Godøya and Valderøya, where Storhornet rises to 497 m, plus many smaller islets. Bridges and tunnels tie them together and, via Ellingsøya, to Ålesund, and Ålesund airport is on Vigra. No boats are listed in Giske. The nearest are in Ålesund, from a long-keeled sailing yacht to a fishing boat, and some of the day cruisers can come with the owner as skipper.

The island of Giske itself covers only 2.67 km² and rises to 26 m. Several sandy beaches line its coast, and its medieval church is clad in white marble. Makkevika, on the island, has been protected since 1988 as a resting place for waders and has a bird-ringing station; it is part of the Giske wetlands Ramsar site, so keep well off its shallows. Giske, Godøy and Valderøy are all stops in our Ålesund from the sea guide.
