Ellingsøya, across the fjord from Ålesund
Ellingsøya is the island just north of Ålesund. Since 1987 it has been joined to the city by the 3.5 km Ellingsøy tunnel under the fjord and to Valderøy in Giske by a second subsea tunnel, and Taftasund bridge links it to the mainland in the east. No boats are listed on the island itself. The closest are in Ålesund: a long-keeled sailing yacht, small day cruisers with galleys and berths, and a sturdy fishing boat.
Ellingsøyfjorden, between the island and the city, is one to two kilometres wide and runs 24 km east to Skodjevika, past once-inhabited islets such as Svinøya, Langøya, Bjørgeholmen, Dyrøya and Vemøya. Ålesund's cargo harbour at Gangstøvika lies on this fjord, so expect ships near the city shore. Grytafjorden opens on the island's north side, and at Kverve on the western tip are the bunkers and gun positions of a coastal battery built by the Germans during the Second World War. Our Ålesund island-hopping guide continues west to Giske and Godøy.
