Sailing from Dubrovnik: islands and routes
Southern Dalmatia suits a first week of charter well: distances are short, the islands lie close together, and most days end in a sheltered harbour or bay.
The Elaphiti Islands and Lokrum
Koločep, Lopud and Šipan are within a couple of hours of the marina, with sandy bays, village restaurants and quiet anchorages. Lokrum, just off the old town, is a nature reserve and a popular stop for a swim during the day.
Mljet, Korčula and Pelješac
Mljet National Park, with its two saltwater lakes, is a natural second or third stop – the park charges an entry fee. Further west, Korčula old town and the Pelješac peninsula complete a classic one-week round trip from Dubrovnik.
Wind and season
In summer the maestral, a steady north-westerly breeze, builds most afternoons and gives good sailing. The jugo from the south-east brings swell and cloud, and the bora can blow hard from the north-east, so check the forecast every morning. May, June and September offer warm water, room in the harbours and lower weekly prices than July and August.
Choosing a boat

Dubrovnik by boat: Komolac, Gruž and the islands
Few boats leave from the old town itself. Most charter yachts listed for Dubrovnik are at ACI Marina Dubrovnik in Komolac, about 6 km up the Rijeka Dubrovačka, a river inlet between 170 and 400 m wide. The marina is open all year; beyond the village of Rožat the inlet becomes narrow and shallow. Others board in Gruž, the city's port, either at the port quays or at Marina Frapa Dubrovnik, which lies across the bay from the ferry terminal. Sailing yachts and catamarans share the fleet with crewed motor yachts and gulets.
Outside the harbour you have choices close by: - Lokrum, a special reserve about 600 m off the city walls, where anchoring damages the Posidonia meadows. - The Elaphiti Islands to the north-west, a small archipelago with Koločep, Lopud and Šipan. - Mljet National Park, a longer day. Boats need a park ticket, speed near the coast and on the lakes is capped at 5 knots, and only rowing boats may enter Malo jezero. Anchoring is allowed at Polače and Pomena.
