Ballangen: a workboat on the Ofotfjord

Ballangen is a village of about 770 people at the head of Ballangen, an 8 km arm on the south side of Ofotfjorden. Since 2020 it has been part of Narvik municipality, and the district has tried mining since the 1600s. What you can rent here is a sturdy open workboat for four people, rigged for fishing with a reel, echo sounder, chart plotter and autopilot. At about 7 knots it is a boat for the near fjord rather than long runs.

Out in the main fjord you can head west towards Barøy lighthouse, where Ofotfjorden meets Vestfjorden, or east towards Narvik. Efjorden, 35 km long, opens further west. At Valle in Efjorden, a rock carving of a skin boat, 9,000 to 11,000 years old and one of the oldest boat figures found in Norway, was discovered in 2017.
