Sortland and the current in Sortlandssundet
Sortland, the regional centre of Vesterålen, calls itself the blue town by the sound. It lies on Langøya, facing Hinnøya across Sortlandssundet, the 30 km strait between Hadselfjorden in the south and Gavlfjorden in the north. The 948 m Sortland Bridge crosses it with 30 m of clearance.
The boats here are small open boats. A new one with GPS and a fish finder is kept north-west of town at Romset, on the Øksnes side. Another stands on a trailer at Strand, across the bridge on Hinnøya, and its owner can deliver and collect it for an extra charge.
Allow for the tidal current. According to the harbour office, the current in Sortland's bay runs north from about two hours before high water at Bodø until almost four hours after, and south around low water, at 1–2 knots or more. Guest berths are at Torghuken Marina in the centre.
