Alta and the Altafjord
Alta lies at the head of the Altafjord, which runs 38 km north from the town to the islands of Stjernøya and Seiland, where it divides into sounds before reaching the open sea. There is also a fast 26-foot cabin boat for experienced drivers and a sailing yacht that goes out with a captain.
In Kåfjorden, a side arm, the battleship Tirpitz lay during the Second World War. Rock carvings at Kåfjord, at Amtmannsnes and in the bay of Jiepmaluokta (Hjemmeluft) are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From mid-May to late July the sun stays above the horizon around the clock.
Salmon are caught with bag nets (kilenot) along the whole fjord, so watch for nets and floats near the shore.
