What is Ship O’Hoi?

Vangsvik, on the Senja side of Solbergfjorden

Vangsvik is a south-facing village on Senja, stretched along about 5 km of road from Hamna in the west to Rubbestad in the east. It looks out across Solbergfjorden to the mainland. It was the administrative centre of the former Tranøy municipality, and it has its own small-boat harbour for leisure boats.

The boats shown here are not in Vangsvik, though. They are across the fjord at Furøy, on Reisafjorden in Sørreisa, roughly 14 km east of the village in a straight line. Expect an open console boat with a 40 hp outboard or a diesel day cruiser with a chart tablet and an echo sounder.

Solbergfjorden is a 27 km sound. Together with Gisundet further north, it separates Senja from the mainland, and to the south-west it continues as Tranøyfjorden towards Vågsfjorden. Finnsnes, the nearest town, is 18 km from Vangsvik by road. For Senja's steep outer coast and its fishing villages, see our Senja and Harstad guide.
