Torvastad, Karmsundet and the boats around it
Torvastad is the northern tip of Karmøy, together with Feøy and the other islands off it. Karmsund Bridge, which links the island to the mainland, lands here. None of the listed boats is moored in Torvastad itself. The nearest is a cabin cruiser a little further south at Avaldsnes. A wooden sjark with a diesel engine lies across the sound in Haugesund, and a small open boat leaves from the small-boat harbour at Kolnes, on the Førresfjorden side of the mainland.
The water you cross is Karmsundet. This sheltered channel was the start of the old sailing route north that is thought to have given Norway its name, and it is still one of the busiest stretches of the Norwegian coast. Keep a lookout for large ships. The bridge gives 45 m of clearance, and the Rehaugene burial mounds from the Bronze Age stand beside it on the Torvastad shore.
