Karmøy, its beaches and Karmsundet
Karmøy municipality covers the island of Karmøy, the island of Fosen and a strip of mainland east of Karmsundet: 244 islands, islets and skerries in all, with about 634 km of coastline. The low island is cut deep by bays such as Veavågen and Eidsvågen and has sandy beaches including Åkrasanden and Stavasanden.
A steel cabin cruiser with berths for a family is listed on the island. The owner of a fast open boat names the small-boat harbour at Kolnes as the pickup point. The page also shows an open boat on Bokn and, in Haugesund, a sjark, a traditional small fishing boat, whose owner lends fishing gear.
Karmsundet, between the island and Haugesund, is the sheltered start of the shipping lane north along the coast and one of the busiest stretches of the Norwegian coast; Karmsund bridge limits ship height to 45 m. On its shore stands Avaldsnes, a royal seat in the Viking Age, with a church from around 1250.
