Haugesund, Smedasundet and Røvær
Haugesund's harbour is Smedasundet, the narrow sound between the town and the islands of Risøy and Hasseløy. It is a sheltered berth for small craft, and on the town side is Indre kai, where the express boats to Stavanger and Bergen and the local boat to Røvær call. A sjark, a traditional fishing boat with a diesel engine, is based in town, and its owner can lend fishing gear. A family cabin cruiser is on Karmøy, and at Kolnes, on the west side of the Førresfjorden, an open boat approved for up to ten starts from the small-boat harbour.
About 10 km north-west of the centre lies Røvær, an island group with its largest island 2.2 km long, once a busy herring station.
Slow down in town: the limit for leisure boats is 5 knots in Smedasundet and Krossen and 8 knots in Vibrandsøysundet. The harbour at Røvær, between Mjåsund and Torgersnes, is also a 5-knot zone.
