Søndeled, at the head of its own fjord

Søndeled was a municipality of its own until 1964, when it merged with Risør. The village lies where Søndeledfjorden ends, about 15 km inland from the Vardøyene islets north-east of Risør, and the Gjerstad river reaches the sea here. A small open console boat, suited to fishing or water-skiing, is listed under Søndeled; the other boats on this page are in Risør, Kragerø, Stabbestad and Sannidal.

The fjord is really several fjords. Its outer part is also called Østerfjorden. By Risør the island of Barmen splits it into Nordfjorden and Sørfjorden, which Rødsfjorden joins in the west, and at the island of Frøyna it narrows and turns north towards the village.

Keep an eye out for the Øisang, the little car ferry that crosses Østerfjorden. Built of wood in 1950, it is one of the smallest and oldest car ferries in Norway. For the outer skerries, see our Lyngør, Risør and Tvedestrand guide.
