Renting a boat in Pylos: a sailing base on Navarino Bay
Pylos, once known as Navarino, is the main harbour on the Bay of Navarino, on the south-west coast of the Peloponnese. A sailing yacht for eight is listed at Pylos Marina, with a minimum charter of four days, so plan a short cruise rather than a day out.
The island of Sphacteria lies across the entrance to the bay. At the northern end, the omega-shaped sand of Voidokilia beach backs onto Gialova Lagoon, a Natura 2000 area and an important stop for migrating birds. Following the coast south, Methoni is about 11 km from Pylos, with its castle and a harbour sheltered by the islands of Sapientza and Schiza.
South-west of Sapientza the seabed drops to the Calypso Deep, 5,267 m down and the deepest point of the Mediterranean. The island lies on the old shipping route between Italy and the Middle East and has seen many wrecks.
