Palermo's charter harbours
Three harbours supply the yachts listed for Palermo. Most leave from La Cala, the city's oldest port, used since the Phoenicians and today a U-shaped tourist harbour in the historic centre. A group of catamarans and sailing yachts is based at Marina Villa Igiea, in the Acquasanta part of the port, and a boat is kept at Marina Galizzi.
The Greek name Panormos meant 'all port', and the coast on either side makes the first days easy: - Mondello, about 7 km from the centre, a 1.5 km bay of white sand between Monte Pellegrino and Capo Gallo. - Capo Gallo–Isola delle Femmine, a marine protected area just beyond it: no boats in zone A, mooring only on marked buoys in zone B, open navigation in zone C. - Cefalù, 70 km east, with its UNESCO-listed cathedral and a tourist harbour behind a breakwater.
Offshore, Ustica lies about 67 km north-west. Its waters became Italy's first marine protected area in 1986, and boats may neither enter nor anchor in zone A near Cala Sidoti, marked by yellow buoys. To the west, the Egadi Islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo sit about 7 km off the coast near Trapani, and our Egadi Islands and western Sicily week includes Palermo among its starting points.
Hydrofoils to Ustica and the Aeolian Islands leave from the same port, so keep a lookout on your way in and out.
