Castellammare del Golfo: catamarans below the Zingaro
All boats listed here are berthed in the Porto di Castellammare del Golfo, below the town's castle, on the gulf that runs from Capo Rama to Capo San Vito. The port has grown quickly, from about 700 berths to around 1,500 on 20 pontoons, with 1–6 m of water at the quays. Come in slowly: the approach is at under 3 knots because of rocks along the mole and at Punta dell'Acqua, and you should keep at least 20 m off the mole below the castle, where a wreck and the Secca della Cernia lie. Recent reports say there is no fuel on the quay, so plan to fill up in San Vito Lo Capo.
The fleet is mainly catamarans, from about 40 feet to large luxury models, with a few sailing yachts.
About 10 km north-west lies Scopello, with its sea stacks and a tuna fishery that dates from the 13th century and last worked in 1984. Beyond it begins the Riserva dello Zingaro, Sicily's first nature reserve (1981), 7 km of undeveloped coast towards San Vito Lo Capo. Our week around the Egadi and the Trapani coast passes the reserve on its final day.
The reserve's sea rules apply all year: no motor navigation within 100 m of the coast and no anchoring within 50 m without permission. In the bathing season, coves such as Cala Marinella, Cala Berretta and Cala Capreria are closed to boats altogether.
