Lysekloster: the abbey above Lysefjorden
Lysekloster takes its name from Lyse Abbey, founded in 1146 by monks from Fountains Abbey near York and the oldest Cistercian monastery in Norway. Its ruins stand 27 km south of central Bergen at the foot of Lysehornet, and the fjord below is named after them. A cabin cruiser is moored at Lysekloster; the rest belong to owners in Os and on Bjørnafjorden, at Nordvik, in Fana, around Søreide and Hjellestad, and in Bergen.
Lysefjorden is small: 6 km long and 2–3 km wide, with more than ten islets in its inner part, Lysøen the largest. Its mouth opens between Korsneset and the island of Skorpo onto Bjørnafjorden, 30 km long, with Tysnesøya and Reksteren on its southern side. In Osøyro, Os Gjestehamn has showers and a pump-out station for a stop in town, and Os is also home of the oselvar, a traditional wooden boat whose building tradition UNESCO recognised in 2016.
