Renting a boat in Loviisa: out to Svartholma sea fortress
Loviisa was founded in 1745 as a border fortress town against Russia, and the bastions Rosen and Ungern east of the centre mark its old defences. Out in the bay, the Svartholma sea fortress was built at the same time to guard the town from the sea. It surrendered to the Russians in 1808 and was left in ruins during the Crimean War in 1855.
A centre-console boat equipped for fishing is listed in Loviisa, with room for three or four to cast at the same time, an electric bow motor, a chartplotter and an echo sounder. Its owner can also trailer it or deliver it to launching places nearby.
Svartholma is about 5 nautical miles from Laivasilta guest harbour at the head of Loviisa Bay, and the fairway there is 2.7 m deep. Our guide to Kotka, Hamina and Loviisa also covers the border-zone and shipping rules further east.
