Hamina: a skippered cruiser from the fortress town
Hamina was rebuilt from 1722 as a fortress town to replace Vyborg, which Sweden had lost to Russia. Its circular street plan inside a star-shaped fortress is rare, with Palmanova in Italy one of the few comparable towns. The Treaty of Fredrikshamn, by which Sweden ceded Finland in 1809, was signed here.
A classic motor cruiser in Hamina has both an inside and an outside helm, a large swim platform with a warm shower, and a heater that keeps the cabins dry on cool days. The owner skippers it, since the tall six-tonne boat handles clumsily in strong wind, and says it suits longer trips from early spring until the ice comes.
The national-park island of Ulko-Tammio is about 16 to 18 nautical miles from Hamina, but only about 6 km from the Russian border. Check the border-zone rules first; our Kotka, Hamina and Loviisa guide explains them.
