Kotka: from the island city to the outer islands
Kotka's centre stands on an island, Kotkansaari, at the mouth of the Kymi River, and the boats on this page are kept in the city: a small hardtop speedboat, a larger cabin boat, and an inflatable with oars whose owner offers to come along fishing and show the spots.
Varissaari lies just off the coast, with the ruins of the Svensksund fortress, a nature trail and a pavilion showing wrecks from a late-18th-century naval battle. Further out, Kaunissaari in Pyhtää, 17 km south-west of the city, has an old fishing village at its southern tip, sandy beaches on its north and east sides and a guest marina. Our Kotka, Hamina and Loviisa guide sets out six routes along this coast.
Kotka is also one of Finland's main cargo ports, so keep a lookout for merchant ships in the fairways leading into the harbour.
