Kjøpmannskjær on the Vrengen sound
Kjøpmannskjær is a small community at the southern tip of Nøtterøy, on the Vrengen sound facing Tjøme. The name is thought to mean the skerry where merchant ships put in to trade, and until the first Vrengen bridge opened in 1932 this was a ferry landing. Today the shore has a boat harbour, a fuel station and a grocery shop geared to boaters, with a larger marina nearby.
None of the listings is in Kjøpmannskjær itself. The closest is a small family boat a little further west on Nøtterøy; several more are on Tjøme across the sound, and the rest are in Tønsberg, Tolvsrød, Hem, Stokke and Sandefjord.
The obvious first outing is car-free Veierland, 4.16 km², which has its own ferry to Tenvik on Nøtterøy; our Færder and Tjøme guide puts it 10–15 minutes from Kjøpmannskjær. Speed in Vrengen is capped at 5 knots, except that from 1 May to 20 August leisure boats may do 8 knots in a marked stretch of the main and secondary fairway.
