Færder: 653 islands and a marine national park
Færder municipality was formed in 2018 by joining Nøtterøy and Tjøme, and it counts 653 islands and skerries on 100 km² of land. Private owners across the municipality and its neighbours supply the boats listed: on Tjøme and Nøtterøy, in Tolvsrød and Tønsberg, and in Hem, Stokke and Sandefjord west across the fjord. Open boats, RIBs, day cruisers and cabin cruisers make up the choice, and for several of them the owner will drive.
South and east of the islands lies Færder National Park, about 340 km², of which only 15 km² is land. With Ytre Hvaler in Norway and Kosterhavet in Sweden it forms a cross-border protected sea of about 1,100 km². Routes to Bolærne, Hvasser and Verdens Ende are in our boating guide to the Færder archipelago.
Two sets of rules shape a day out. Water scooters are banned in the national park, and in its zone B all traffic, motorboats included, must stay 50 m from land from 15 April to 15 July while seabirds nest. Færder's own speed regulation, in force since 2022, sets a 5-knot band along every shore, islet and skerry, and allows 30 knots only in a marked zone of open water past Fulehuk and Laksskjær.
