Gryt, the gateway to the Östergötland skerries
Gryt is a small village on the Baltic coast, about 10 km east of Valdemarsvik. It takes its name from the island where its church was built: gryt means a heap of stones or stony ground. Since 2015 it has formed one built-up area with Fyrudden, the harbour from which most trips into the archipelago start. Despite its name, Fyrudden never had a lighthouse; it is named after its pine trees.
A Swedish-built motorsailer of about 36 ft for four is based in Gryt, with bow thruster, electric anchor windlass, shore power, and a ceramic hob and oven instead of bottled gas. The owner can also come along as skipper.
According to our Gryt archipelago guide, Harstena is about 6 nautical miles from Fyrudden and Häradskär lighthouse about 5 to the south-east. Watch for signs ashore: many skerries are bird-protection areas, most often closed from 1 April to 31 July.
