Renting a boat on Frei, by Omsundet
Frei, on the southern side of Kristiansund, was once a municipality of its own. Its largest settlement, Rensvik, lies at the northern end, on Omsundet, the sound between Frei and Nordlandet, with Kristiansund airport at Kvernberget just across the water.
A 17 ft open console boat for up to five with a 60 hp outboard is listed on Frei, placed by Omsundet near Rensvik. The owner rents only to experienced boaters who hold a licence.
The sound is marked by a light on each side, and the road crosses it on the Omsund bridge from 1981, 292 m long with a main span of 100 m, next to the old arch bridge that is now closed to cars. Small holms such as Rensvikholmen and Klungelholmen lie just off the shore. Frei church, a neo-Gothic building from 1897, stands at the island's southern tip.
