Bormes-les-Mimosas: a base facing the Îles d'Or
Every yacht listed here is based at Port de Bormes-les-Mimosas, a 7-hectare harbour with room for about 950 boats, run by the local yacht club. Catamarans make up a large share of the fleet, alongside monohull sailing yachts of around 40 to 47 ft, and some can be chartered from five days rather than a full week.
The port looks straight out at the Îles d'Or: Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Le Levant, a few miles offshore. Le Levant lies about 10 km from Cap Bénat, and only a small civilian part of it is open to visitors, because almost 95 % of the island is a military missile-test site closed to anyone without clearance. Porquerolles and Port-Cros belong to Port-Cros National Park, and our guide to sailing the Hyères islands sets out a week from Bormes with the park's anchoring rules. Closer to home, the commune's 22 km of coast includes the beaches of La Favière, L'Estagnol, Cabasson and Pellegrin.
Rounding Cap Bénat you pass the Fort de Brégançon, the French president's official summer residence, on a 35 m rock joined to the shore by a causeway. Give it a wide berth.
