Renting a boat in Bålsta, Håbo's gateway to Mälaren

Bålsta, the centre of Håbo municipality, lies near Mälaren about 50 km north-west of Stockholm and 50 km south of Uppsala, on the E18 and the Mälaren railway line. Håbo is edged by Ekolsundsviken to the south and west and by Ekoln to the north, and on the Skokloster peninsula stands Skokloster Castle, a baroque palace begun in 1654 and now a museum.

A 30 ft walkaround motor cruiser is kept at Frösunda, south of the centre. It has a 350 hp diesel, sleeping places for five, a galley, a toilet with shower, radar and an autopilot, so it suits weekends as well as day trips. For Sigtuna, Birka and Mariefred, see our Lake Mälaren guide.

Mälaren is the drinking-water source for about 2.3 million people, and discharging toilet waste from leisure boats is banned on all Swedish lakes, so use a pump-out station.
