Renting a boat in Mariefred: Gripsholm Castle on Lake Mälaren

Mariefred lies on Lake Mälaren about 65 km west of Stockholm, in Strängnäs municipality. The town takes its name from the Carthusian monastery Pax Mariae, "Mary's peace", begun in 1493, and it grew up beside Gripsholm, where Gustav Vasa began building the royal castle in 1537. The guest harbour lies right next to the castle.

A 23 ft cabin cruiser is listed in Mariefred. Its owner says it takes up to six for a day out, while four is the most it sleeps comfortably.

Scheduled steamboat traffic to Mariefred began in 1873, and the steamship S/S Mariefred has run the route from Stockholm every season since 1903, so you may meet it on the water. Strängnäs, with its 13th-century cathedral, is close by on the same south shore; our guide to boating on Lake Mälaren covers it and the rest of the lake.
