Boating in Västra Götaland: coast, canals and Vänern
This county page gathers boats from in and around Göteborg. Almost all of them are moored in the city itself, with a sailing yacht in Västra Frölunda and a small sailboat in Kullavik further south along the coast. The selection is built around sailing yachts, many suited to a week or a long weekend; some day cruisers and a RIB complete it.
Västra Götaland holds three very different kinds of water: - Bohuslän, the granite archipelago running north from Göteborg to the Norwegian border. Marstrand, an island town just north of the city, keeps its guest piers open all year. - Kosterhavet National Park off Strömstad, created in 2009 as Sweden's first marine national park and covering 38,820 hectares. - Vänern, Sweden's largest lake at 5,450 km², with about 22,000 islands. A boat from Göteborg reaches it up the Göta älv and the Trollhätte kanal: 82 km and six locks that lift you 44 m.
Our Bohuslän guide picks out harbours and coves along the west coast.
On paperwork, Swedish rules require no licence for a leisure boat under 12 m long and 4 m wide, though a water scooter needs a driver's certificate. In Kosterhavet the park limit is 25 knots, cut to 5 knots around the Koster islands from 15 May to 31 August.
