Sotenäs: a granite peninsula with seven guest harbours
Sotenäs municipality is a peninsula of Bohus granite, bounded by the Skagerrak to the west and south, Bottnafjorden to the north and Åbyfjorden to the east. The boats on this page are spread across it: an open boat that goes out with its owner as skipper, a sailing boat in Hunnebostrand, a cruiser in Kungshamn and a day cruiser on Bohus-Malmön, plus a centre-console boat further south at Nordströmmarna on Skaftö.
Seven guest harbours are run by the municipality: Bovallstrand, Hasselösund, Hunnebostrand, Kungshamn, Malmön, Smögen and Väjern, from the largest in Hunnebostrand to the smallest at Väjern. Our guide to Smögen and Sotenäs by boat links them into routes.
The most exposed trip is to the Hållö archipelago, Hållö and Sälö, the last larger islands before the open Skagerrak. The nature reserve, created in 1975, has about 40 glacial potholes and Bohuslän's oldest lighthouse, lit since 1842. There is a guest harbour on Hållö's east side, but camping is banned, fires are only allowed at marked sites and dogs must be kept on a lead.
