Hunnebostrand, the granite harbour at the Sotekanalen
A 27-foot sailing boat, which its owner calls a floating summer cottage, is moored in Hunnebostrand for the season. The other boats are in Kungshamn, on Bohus-Malmön and elsewhere in Sotenäs, among them a boat that goes out with its owner as skipper.
The village, 10 km north of Kungshamn, was a centre of the Swedish stone industry, with some 60 granite quarries nearby at its peak; that era ended when the Lahälla quarry closed in 1978. Its guest harbour is the largest in Sotenäs, with about 200 berths in 3 to 6 m of water, plus petrol, diesel and bottled gas. Our Smögen and Sotenäs guide covers the way south.
The sheltered route south runs through the Sotekanalen, opened in 1935. Sailing is banned in the canal, and the Sotenäsbron swing bridge has 5.7 m of clearance; call it on VHF channel 6 for an opening.
