Bohus-Malmön, the stonecutters' island

Malmön, postal address Bohus-Malmön, is a 5.2 km² island in Sotenäs with under 300 year-round residents, served by a car ferry from the mainland since 1953. A day cruiser for up to eight is moored on the island. The other boats are elsewhere in Sotenäs, in Kungshamn and Hunnebostrand, among them a boat rented with its owner as skipper, and further south at Nordströmmarna on Skaftö, from where the owner suggests Gåsö, Hållö lighthouse, Gullholmen and Käringön.

Malmön has had fishermen since at least the 1500s, and Sweden's first granite stonecutting works opened here in 1842; quarrying continued on a small scale until 1977, and the old Stallebrottet quarry now hosts theatre. The municipal guest harbour lies in the bay between Malmön and Kalven, with about 50 berths, stern anchor or fixed moorings, 2–4 m of water and booking through Dockspot. Our Smögen and Sotenäs guide includes the run over from Kungshamn.
