Do I need a boat licence in Italy?
Not always: in Italy you can drive a boat without a licence if the engine is no more than 30 kW (40.8 hp) and you stay within 6 nautical miles of the coast. With a bigger engine, further out or on a jet ski you need one; with a skipper you need none. Read our full licence guide.

Reggio Calabria: boats on the Strait of Messina
Reggio sits on the Calabrian side of the Strait of Messina, with Messina across the water in Sicily. Boats here include a sailing yacht chartered by the week and a motorboat that is also bookable by the day. The city port, built in 1873, has a 110 m wide entrance, and a mole on its inner side is set aside for pleasure craft.
The strait joins the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. It is 3.1 km wide at its narrowest, between Torre Faro and Villa San Giovanni, and has strong tidal currents.
Plan around the traffic. Fast catamarans and ferries cross to Messina from Reggio, and hydrofoils leave for the Aeolian Islands. The strait has a traffic separation scheme monitored by Messina VTS, and the rules for small craft are set out in our Costa degli Dei sailing week.
