Milazzo: the mainland port facing the Aeolians
Charter boats in Milazzo leave from two places in the harbour. Most of the gulets berth at Porto Santa Maria Maggiore, while the sailing yachts, a catamaran and a gulet are at Poseidon Marina. Charters are for a minimum of a week.
Milazzo is the main port for the Aeolian Islands, with ferries and hydrofoils to Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Filicudi, Alicudi and Stromboli, and tankers also call for the oil refinery. Keep a sharp lookout in and around the harbour. Vulcano, the closest of the islands, lies some 18 nautical miles north-west of the harbour as the crow flies.
Take a look at the town's own headland too. The protected marine area of Capo Milazzo, created in 2018, covers 755 hectares and about 5.7 km of coast between the Gulf of Patti and the Gulf of Milazzo, with posidonia meadows, gorgonians and underwater caves. The bay has a long naval history as well: the Romans won their first sea victory over Carthage here in 260 BC.
Our seven-day Aeolian route plans the week island by island.
