What is Ship O’Hoi?
Tropea: a marina at the foot of the old town
The whole fleet here lies in the Porto di Tropea, the marina below the town's cliff, which has about 600 berths and room for yachts up to 55 m. It is a sailing base above all: monohulls and catamarans for the week, and a large motor yacht.
Tropea stands on a rock above its beach, and just below, the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola crowns a sandstone outcrop that was once entirely surrounded by the sea. South-west along the Costa degli Dei, the white-grey granite headland of Capo Vaticano, 124 m high and topped by a lighthouse, shelters coves best reached from the water, among them Grotticelle, a light-sand beach formed by three adjoining bays. On clear days Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands show on the horizon, and our Tropea and Costa degli Dei route includes the crossing.
Mind the bathing zones. Under the coast guard's bathing-safety ordinance for the Vibo Valentia district, which covers Tropea and Ricadi, boats must stay more than 200 m off beaches and 150 m off steep coast during the bathing season, from the third week of May to the third week of September, and may reach the shore only through marked corridors at up to 3 knots.
