Renting a boat in Portoferraio: Elba's old Medici port

Portoferraio is Elba's largest town, built on a small hill with the sea on three sides. Cosimo I de' Medici founded it in 1548 as Cosmopoli, and its forts Stella, Falcone and Inglese still stand. In 1814 it became the seat of Napoleon's first exile. A catamaran with four cabins is based in the port and chartered by the week.

Visiting boats berth in the Darsena Medicea, the old Medici basin, which is best booked ahead in summer. About 8 nm west along the north coast lies Marciana Marina, and the volcanic island of Capraia is a day's sail away. Legs and park rules are in our week around Elba and the Tuscan islands.

The Piombino ferries run in and out of the bay, so keep a sharp lookout and cross their routes at right angles.
