Livorno: the Viale Italia seafront and the Meloria shoals

Several of the boats here are small open motorboats of 5.5 to 5.7 m. They are based at a long-established bathing establishment on Viale Italia, Livorno's seafront road, and rented for a day on the coast. Each has a 40 hp outboard, and the listings say no licence is needed; our guide to boat licences in Italy explains the limits. A 15 m sailing yacht, chartered by the week, is also listed in Livorno.

The goal most people aim for is the Secche della Meloria, a field of rocks and shoals rising in the Ligurian Sea about 6 km north-west of Livorno, between the coast and the island of Gorgona. It is marked by a lighthouse next to the old Meloria tower, and the seabed is covered in Posidonia meadows. Genoa defeated Pisa in these waters in 1284. Today the shoals are a marine protected area of 9,372 ha, divided into zones A, B and C; the listed day boats are authorised to operate there.

Take care over the shoals. Between the northern lighthouse and the tower the water is only 1 to 4 m deep.
