Yes. In Croatia you need a recognised boat licence, such as an ICC valid for coastal waters, to drive any rented motorboat or skipper a bareboat yacht, and bareboat charter also needs a VHF radio certificate (SRC). With a skipper or a crewed yacht you need no licence. Read our full licence guide.

Novigrad on the Novigrad Sea
This is Novigrad in Zadar County, not Istria. The village lies in a narrow bay on the south side of the Novigrad Sea, an inland sea at the end of the Velebit Channel, about 11 km by 4.5 km and no more than 37 m deep. The boats listed here are motor boats for four, based in Novigrad and offered both as a weekly charter and by a private owner.
You enter the sea through the narrow Novsko Ždrilo channel opposite Maslenica. The town harbour winds inland like an inverted S, its entrance marked by a small lighthouse. At the eastern end the Zrmanja flows in past Obrovac; kayaks and canoes use the river in July and August, rafts in spring and autumn.
The bura blows hardest below the Velebit mountains, as our guide to Croatia's sailing areas notes, so check the forecast before heading out through the channel.
