Renting a boat in La Grande-Motte: the pyramid resort on the Gulf of Lion
La Grande-Motte was built from scratch between 1960 and 1975 on empty dunes near Montpellier, with the marina planned into the town from the start. Its architect, Jean Balladur, drew on pre-Columbian pyramids for its pyramid-shaped blocks. The port faces the Gulf of Aigues-Mortes, the northernmost corner of the Gulf of Lion, which curves east to the Pointe de l'Espiguette at Le Grau-du-Roi.
The sailing trimaran listed here uses La Grande-Motte as the start of a one-way sailing course along the coast to Chiavari in Liguria, with stops at the Calanques, Porquerolles, Cannes and Imperia. Check the listing for coming departures.
Arriving by boat, call the harbour office, open around the clock, on VHF 9 and tie up at the reception quay below it. The mistral and the tramontane both blow on this coast, so watch the forecast. More on the region is in our guide to France's sailing areas.
