Chioggia stands on a small island at the southern entrance to the Venetian Lagoon, about 25 km south of Venice, linked by causeways to the mainland and to Sottomarina. Heading north inside the lagoon you pass Pellestrina, an 11 km barrier island with four villages of painted houses, San Pietro in Volta among them. At its southern end, Ca' Roman is known for its pine trees and birdlife. Beyond Pellestrina come Malamocco and the Lido, and then Venice itself.
