Bonifacio: catamarans at the end of a cliff inlet

Every boat on this page is a catamaran berthed in the Port de Bonifacio, at the far end of a narrow inlet below the limestone cliffs and the Genoese citadel. The marina is open all year, has 350 berths with about 150 for visitors, and its harbour office answers on VHF channel 9. Most catamarans are rented bareboat by the week; the largest go out with a skipper.

The inlet is a sight in itself. The sea cave of Saint-Antoine, also called Napoleon's Hat, lies at its entrance, and further along the cliffs the Sdragonato cave has an opening shaped like Corsica. To the east, the granite Lavezzi islands, Cavallo among them, are classed as a reinforced protection zone of the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve; Lavezzu is the island visitors usually land on. Sardinia is 11 km away across the strait at its narrowest. Our south Corsica and Bonifacio Strait itinerary plans a week between the two islands.

Inside the port the limit is 5 knots, and the marina asks for extra care in summer, when harbour traffic is heavy. It gives west and south-west as the prevailing winds, and the strait is known for strong wind, currents and shoals, so check the forecast before every crossing.
